There is not any one thing that makes a school safe, rather it is the combination of things. This is often referred to as layering approaches. Each layer is equally important.

Safety and security measures to harden the school environment are based on information obtained from a comprehensive assessment of the building and campus.

Emergency preparedness is an important part of school safety response and recovery efforts. Plans exist for all types of hazards, natural and human, that may occur at different times of day and in different locations.

When individuals feel appreciated for their contributions to the community through positive feedback from other members, it fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens their commitment to maintaining a safe environment.

Adults work WITH students to create and maintain a sense of community. They understand that conflict is an innate part of human behavior and provide opportunities for students to learn how to resolve conflicts in a healthy and restorative manner through direct instruction and modeling.
